About attribute-level sourcing
Attribute-level sourcing lets you specify different profile sources for individual user attributes. Without it, all of a user's attributes are provided by a single profile source.
An Okta user's profile source is typically a directory service like Active Directory or an app like Workday. If you use multiple directories or apps, you can prioritize profile sources so that user attributes are sourced from different sources based on their assignments. Attribute-level sourcing takes this a step further, letting you designate different profile sources for different user attributes.
For example, an Okta user may have their profile attributes like first name, last name, and department sourced from Workday. With attribute-level sourcing, their phone number and email address can be sourced from Active Directory, and their personal email address or preferred display name can be sourced from Okta and managed by the end user.
Profile sourcing only applies to Okta user profiles, not app user profiles.
To complete attribute-level sourcing you complete these tasks:
- Make the app the profile source. See Make an app the profile source.
- Define the attribute profile source. See Define the attribute profile source.
- Map profile attributes. See Map profile attributes.
